3 Big Mistakes I Made While Backpacking the Bluff Wilderness Trail

3 Big Mistakes I Made While Backpacking the Bluff Wilderness Trail

Last week, when the blog on the Bluff Wilderness Trail was posted, I promised to share the lessons I learned on this backpacking trip. They may not look like big mistakes, but together or even separately, they could cause big headaches or worse.  Full disclosure: I ‘m a bit embarrassed to admit them, but here they are.   I cheaped out on a sleeping bag.  I have a good sleeping bag, but it’s big and heavy.I wanted one small…

Nova Scotia’s Iconic Peggy’s Cove

Nova Scotia’s Iconic Peggy’s Cove

Anyone who has not yet visited Peggy’s Cove, hands up! While it is the most well-known  symbol of Nova Scotia- recognized universally  as ‘Nova Scotia’, not all of us have made this trek. We are often  BAD at seeing our own province, people! Anyhoo,I think everyone should brave the parking nightmare ( circumvent this by going in the off-season – the waves are just as heart stopping and the restaurant is still open) and enjoy this most famous of tourist…

Polly’s Cove Hiking Trail

Polly’s Cove Hiking Trail

It took me three tries, but I finally found  the Polly’s Cove hiking trail. And it’s not because it’s all that hard to find either. I don’t know what that says about me. We won’t go there, I guess. Atlantic View Trail

Atlantic View Trail

The Atlantic View Trail is located within the Halifax Regional Municipality near Lawrencetown -it stretches for almost 20  km round trip along the abandoned Musquodoboit trail bed and so far we have only done part of this beautiful coastal trail section – from the end of highway 207 just past Three Fathom Harbour Road in Porters Lake. Entrance can also be gained from the opposite end, at the Lawrencetown Community Centre.   I’d rate this trail as easy (find other…

Mic Mac Bar and Grill-A Restaurant Review

Mic Mac Bar and Grill-A Restaurant Review

Would you expect to find a busy restaurant sharing a parking lot with a RV rental? Well we didn’t-didn’t even notice Mic Mac Bar  and Grill the few times we drove our visiting friends down to pick up their vacation RV. Once we did notice it, we thought it would be easy enough to find again. My brother is a former Halifax cabbie and he knows where everything is-all the good restaurants, shortcuts and  back roads. We should really ask…

Inside Maud Lewis’ House

Inside Maud Lewis’ House

I’ve always been a little bit curious about Maud Lewis. Being native Nova Scotian, it’s hard not to be-she is one of the more recognizable names in recent cultural history, especially with the overwhelming popularity of last year’s movie “Maudie” I was treated to a special showing of Maudie last fall at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, along with  a chance to see her wee house itself. And wee it was!  For the life of me,I cannot fathom two people…
